CURRENTLY ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS
Hi there, I’m Jen (she/they)!
Where I’m From & My Background
I was born and raised in Thunder Bay, and am of mixed settler origin. I worked in the helping profession for the first decade of my career in Northwestern Ontario in a variety of roles from Mental Health Worker teaching life skills, Crisis Response Worker, Contract Lecturer at Lakehead University and a psychotherapist in both public and private settings. I’ve found my passion in psychotherapy by providing individuals with an authentic and warm space to navigate their own journey in therapy.
Who I Work With
My primary focus in my practice has been supporting folks who have experience with trauma, relationship difficulties, and challenges navigating emotions. I predominantly work with adults and relationships. This may look like monogamous couples, other relationship structures such as ethical non-monogamy (ENM) or relationships trying to figure out what type of relationship works best for their needs and values.
I have experience with and am comfortable working with adults, youth (adolescents), families, and relationships. I have worked a lot with trauma survivors, first responders, queer identifying clients, neurodivergent individuals and in general folks struggling with self-esteem, substance use, anxiety, depression, anger, grief, and transitions in life.
How I Approach Therapy
Giving folks a comfortable, genuine space to explore their mental health is essential to my approach. As someone with their own trauma history, I know how difficult it can be to be vulnerable and reach out for help. Some of the most important values both to me personally and professionally are integrity and compassion. I aim to make our sessions as comfortable for you as possible while tailoring my approach to fit your needs. I will work at your pace while using evidence-based practices to provide you the tools to make positive changes in your life. I use many metaphors, drawings, hand-made worksheets and humour (where appropriate) to help make the process lighter.
Training & Ongoing Learning
I am a Narrative Therapist at heart, and embed this in my work with clients; allowing them to rewrite stories about themselves that may hold them back. I am trained in and have experience with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PET), Trauma focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) and Gottman Couples Method (Level 2). If you’re not familiar with these acronyms or terms, they essentially mean that I am able to help you better recognize and challenge negative thoughts, manage emotions, tolerate distress, improve relationships, be more present in the moment, and decrease impairing mental health symptoms. These therapy modalities are helpful for folks with depression, anxiety, PTSD, BPD, or life stress in general.
I am currently enrolled in a dual certification program through the Integrative Sex Therapy Institute (ISTI) to become a certified Sex and Couple’s therapist (CSCT) & AASECT certified Sex Therapist. AASECT is the American Association of Sexuality, Educators and Therapists, that holds a high standard of promoting the ongoing sexual health of people in North America. I aim to complete my certification by the start of 2028.
Identity & Positionality
As a pansexual, demi-girl, I consider myself a member and ally of the 2SLGTBQ+ community. I work from an intersectional, trauma-informed and harm reduction lens. I center my practice in decolonization, embracing humility and ongoing reflection.
I also do not use any AI in my practice, ensuring all aspects of your care come from a human.
Outside of the office, I enjoy running, knitting/crocheting, hanging out with my pets, rock-climbing, and board games with pals. I ensure to keep up-to date with concepts in mental health by listening to audio books, attending my own therapy, and engaging in clinical supervision. I am passionate about growing and learning as I continue in this field to be the best clinician I can be.
